My conceptual art is my name “Basak” which means wheat, grain in Turkish meaning.I have researched and interpreted in different ways.
First of foremost developed as a cultural plant identity; made a dough with yeast, flour and water but first of foremost i would like to show my real wheats and my mindmap.

First on my school wall now on my living room.

Second development i have analysed writing letters as developed B with dough and tried to write some other letters as “Go Turkiye” with sewing machine.Writing different techniques, every letter have different characteristics i believe.

I am interested in creating T character is modern calligraphy very meaningful as freedom, artistic expression.

I really like analysing tag letters through my aim is to build a piece in which just a single letter B is visible or redeable from a particular point of view.
i didn’t have to care about the whole composition of the lettering as a whole word Basak.

i tried to draw 2 dimentional shapes on my sketchbook also draw B on tree and explored trees characters as i believe every single branch has different characters and have different formations.
On my sketchbook i developed three dimensional objects yet others are included with a basic graphic design with art interact with writing letters in a playful way.My writings approach could urban with art and activism.I am not a graphic artist however i interested in possibilities to present some elements.

Different technique of my name as canva photoshop with figures
Artistic letters with wheat on photoshop, played with letters and figure

On my Monoprint course I have created my name images as B letter name with abstract form.First i draw then A3 printout etching ink with roller.I put the aliminum plate first, draw edges on registration board,i put some blank paper to take the ink off, played tracings as positive tracing with tools and negative tracing with different tools,i put the paper inside of water tray for 20 minutes and with tissue paper on press machine very delicately and carefully then wait for dryness.

I explored my name on different lost alphabets as different cultural and symbolic writing system, phonetics.I researched these alphabets from dafont.com and visited British Museum that i got a mini alphabet tablet represented in The Egyptian Hieroglyphic alphabet which wrote was used picture symbols called hieroglyphs.Other alphabets i explored, Viking (Runes) very oldest runic system , and Old English(Anglo-Saxon) alphabets switched to Latin letters.I asked myself why this is interesting for conceptual art is each reflecting a different cultural and symbolic writing system and these alphabets change and transform the identity by connecting to design, calligraphy, artworks, history, cultural connections, and lost alphabets, lost languages.

basak

On viking runes each rune had phonetic sounds and magical meanings i learnt.

I went to Hyde Park to see the themes of nature meanings as some trees shows as a dancer.
When i researched “Urban Calligraphy and Beyond”it gives me a perspective include details of letters , words, alphabets.Trees create organic, rhythmic lines that feel spontaneous structured also Roots connect trees to the earth, absorbing themselves and symbolizing history, and life.

Some roots looks like hands as protect soil.

And some are opened their arms then hugging nature as an urban emotions so roots connect nature, graffiti or calligraphy writings connects humans.Roots have hidden meanings, personal stories, natural and cultural identity.
As doing my conceptual art of my name; roots and calligraphy together to explore themes like nature, urban, tradition, identity and resistance. My research and calligraphy artworks that mix natural elements (roots) with street culture (calligraphy) create powerful dialogues about personal story, history, freedom, movement, language; LIFE!

As i mentioned on my research,I have explored Michael Craig-Martin’s “Oak Tree and Text” that reminds me the idea of transubstantiation in the same way as the Catholic religious belief that “bread” represents the body of Christ, and wine symbolizes his blood, referencing Jesus’ Last Supper so wine are changed into Christ’s body and blood.
I believe i am a nature material person.I quite interested in some ground nature elements as clove, cinnamon, soil, coffee, turmeric.Because i believe smell can be conceptual.
Natural materials have deep meanings.Soil can represent life, death, roots, life, cinnamon, coffee, and clove can symbolize energy, memory, culture,or emotions.Conceptual art is not just about what we see but also what we engage feelings or smell. Smell also linked to emotions in the brain.
Clove is also medicine and breath freshener.

On my critic time I wanted to remind people smell fresh clove then deeper feelings as home, travel, history.

I have tried some natural elements, used real organic materials to express my ideas as wheat, grain, coffee on carved wood.Carving wood was really hard for me so i give up however quite interested in transforming, watch absorb into the wood, reflecting evolution so it was my first try. I engaged touch, smell coffee and also realized that dark stains from coffee symbolize time, nostalgia to me and i loved this artwork because it is about nature.Wood inked to roots, life cycles reminded my childhood as we have used some cooking stuff or for furniture for dining room. This was a place of food as well.Wheat is growth, agriculture, harvest but for me my name and survival although it has soft, tiny and sensible parts.

I put cloves on orange then burnt them to feel an amazing smell, when clove is burnt it brings good luck, positive energy to the mind and to the environment, people believe that when clove is burnt it chases away bad energy or vibrations.

As i mentioned smell can be conceptual it reminds me the scent of pencil shavings is often one of the most loved nostalgic smell on my childhood especcially when i was in stationary shop.

My first try on wheat and grain embroidery on canvas.

i have added some natural dry flowers and real wheat on my canvas, sticked hardly although canvas texture was delicate it contrasts with embroidery blended traditional handcraft.I believe it connected art and agriculture. This technique invite people to reflect on nature, freedom on art, and heritage. This artwork expressed my memory as my amazing grandma times as human connection to nature.

On my other experiment i made a wheat-grain based yogurt soup which is very traditional in my country.I used flour, grain, yoghurt, olive oil, butter, spices and egg.I believe it can be an absolutely be conceptual art as it carries a strong idea, symbolism, and experience because it can highlight farming, agriculture, wheat grows express as rebirth, yogurt is fermented as transformation, spices smell can be conceptual in sensory of art also wheat-based foods can represent migration, memory, history.

I have explored from another part as sound concept.
When writing Basak, linguistic analyse shows me the Turkish “S” sound can be stretched to “shhh”, which means be quiet. I remember this sound from hospitals wall that nurses make in can be a powerful symbol in conceptual art to represent silence, control, and social behavior.

Also German speakers might replace the “Ş” (sh sound) with a “Z” or “Sch” sound “k” may be more harsh and clear, making the name sound stronger. Also German people write this “s”sound “sch”.
